Success is a choice – change your mindset

Written by Yolanda Vosloo

“Life is all about choices” is what my mom always says. Therefore, Success is a Choice.

I did not completely agree with her growing up because I felt I never had a choice. While you’re growing up your parents decide everything for you… or so I believed.

When I had a child I decided to never ever let him believe he did not have a choice. I gave him choices since he was old enough to speak. For example, he got to choose what to wear – I’d put out two options and he had to choose one. He had to choose between two fruits, or two treats, or two juices, and so on. Obviously, I did not give him total freedom in every aspect of his life but I made him feel empowered by giving him some choices and always say – You get to choose and I would praise whatever choice he made to be the right or best choice.

As he grew older, the choices and the options became more and more and I never allowed him to say “I did not have a choice”. I’d say you always have a choice, but you have to accept the consequences of your decisions.

There are rules for a reason, but you still have a choice to abide by them or not. If you choose to ignore or break the rules, there will be a punishment of some sort. If you disobey traffic laws, you face the consequence of hefty fines or worse – still, you have a choice.

I also feel that taking responsibility for the life you created is very empowering. It is a victim mentally to blame others for things that happen to you in your life. It is powerful to say I take full responsibility and will learn the lesson and do better next time. That decision and those words will serve you well.

When I learned this lesson from this one personal development program I am currently working through, I have become much more aware of my thoughts and the words that exit my mouth. Man, was I self-sabotaging!!  It was shocking when I realised how my thoughts and words have been holding me back from really living my dream life and having success.

Here are 5 simple tips to help you create a success mindset

  1. Stop and think
  2. Breathe
  3. Gratitude
  4. Meditate
  5. Laugh
